A "cleft palate" is an unfortunate disfigurement. You can be born with it, just like that. Even in this country. If it doesn't get treated it is quite a handicap. Eting, drinking, speaking and it looks horrible. Other then that nothing is wrong with these people. They can become a professor, or a CEO or a president. Everywhere in the world there are people who where born with a cleft palate. We do not accept that those people don't get treated. In the Netherlands and the western world this always gets treated. The Netherlands even has 'world knowledge' regarding this treatment. We want to do something with that. In Vietnam they do not have this knowledge. There are quite a few occurances of 'cleft palate' infants. Even more then in the Netherlands. They do not get treated enough yet. We would like to teach this 'trick' to Vietnamese surgeons. After which they can solves the problem themselves. The patients will get a chance at a normal social life. We would like to teach as many surgeons as possible. So that there is a chance that the surgery will also be performed outside of the large city. If you live in the city you are more likely to get treated. If you live far from the city: You are at the back of the row. The population of Vietnam is still very poor. This operation costs about $100 US per child. Costs for bandages, food, patient care, etc. The average income in Vietnam is about $400 per person per year. Then a $100 dollar is a lot. What if it where your kid? Thats why. Simple right?

Een "hazelip" is een akelige afwijking. Je kunt er 'zomaar' mee geboren worden. Dat komt ook in ons land voor. Als daar dan niets aan gedaan wordt heb je een enorme handicap. Eten, drinken, spreken en 'je ziet er niet uit'. Verder is er met zo iemand niets aan de hand. Die kan ook professor worden, of directeur of minister. In ieders omgeving zijn mensen die ooit met een 'hazenlip' geboren werden. Wij accepteren niet dat zo iemand niet behandeld kan worden. In Nederland wordt daar dus altijd iets aan gedaan. Wij hebben zelfs een 'wereldkennis' op dat gebied. Daar willen we wat mee doen. In Vietnam hebben ze die kennis nog niet. Daar komen heel veel patientjes met hazenlippen voor. Meer nog dan in Nederland Die worden nog niet in voldoende mate behandeld. Wij willen de Vietnamese chirurgen dat 'trucje' leren. Dan kunnen ze hun eigen probleem oplossen. Dan krijgen die patientjes ook uitzicht op een sociaal geaccepteerd leven. Wij willen 'veel' chirurgen opleiden . Dan kan er ook buiten 'de grote stad' worden geopereerd. Als je in de stad woont ben je sneller aan de beurt. Als je buiten, ver buiten, de grote stad woont: 'dan sta je achteraan de rij'. De bevolking van Vietnam is nog erg arm. Zo'n operatie kost ongeveer 100.- US$ per kind. Kosten voor verbandmiddelen, voedsel, verpleging, etc. Het gemiddelde inkomen in Vietnam is nu nog ongeveer 300 Euro per persoon per jaar. Dan is honderd Dollar heel veel. En het zal je kind maar wezen. Vandaar. Simpel toch?
